Corporate Lawyer
Interview
Here is Jorge Pascual, the legal man with a golf pro background. If you come to the office to pick him up, forget the suit and tie. He wears casual clothes and sneakers, but he is the best at his job. Let’s get to know a little about him.
Answer: It was pure coincidence. I didn’t know about the existence of this industry until my Master’s internship, so let’s say it was a wonderful serendipity (I love this word).
A: Even though it might seem a boring job, I feel that being a Corporate Lawyer is comparable to a ride in a roller coaster, sometimes you feel dizzy afterwards, but, in the end, it has been an enjoyable and frenetic ride.
The best part of my job is getting to work with all the teams in the company. It is very satisfying working with people with diverse educational and personal backgrounds. Normally lawyers are surrounded by like-minded people, it’s more like a bubble. In Tappx you can get out of this bubble and learn from all of your colleagues.
A: In my opinion, the key to success as a Corporate Lawyer resides in changing the classic paradigm of a legal department. Don’t be the “No department”, there is always a legal solution for every business inquiry.
For that, it is key to have strong soft skills such as empathy, being a communicative person and creative with the solutions proposed.
A: In less than two months I have been able to establish a legal department from scratch and the results of the synergies created are very positive so far. I am really proud of this accomplishment as it required cooperation with different teams and people. It feels great when everybody gives their best towards a common goal.
A: First things first so I start my day checking my mail inbox and Slack so I am not missing any communication and, also, to start organizing the priorities for the day. Then, time to “play” with my beloved contracts (we, lawyers, LOVE the Track Changes tool for contractual negotiation) and all the daily tasks that might arise. Those range from contract drafting to clarifying any legal inquiry from a colleague.
A: I believe that programmatic marketing will increase in popularity the next couple of years. Nowadays it looks like a very specific industry, but I expect it to be mainstream anytime soon.
As laws regarding the industry are still very unclear and volatile, legal departments have the amazing possibility of being innovative, even having an impact on further regulations. Creative, modern and technical legal departments will be the ones leading improvement and innovation for the industry.
A: Around 20/25. It is not that bad, actually. I tend to communicate internally via Slack which lowers a lot the number of mails to write every day.
A: Spotify. I spend most of my time listening to some music, even when I’m sleeping or just taking a quick nap.
A: I go out for a walk with Nate (my 2 y/o dog).
A: I would set up a proper music studio at home, that’s probably my lifetime dream. I definitely prefer winning a lawsuit, it is more gratifying.
